SARGON’S STORY

Stolen & Sold for Slaughter ~ Oct 2016

Sargon’s tragic story has all the elements of corruption, deceit, and non-existent regulation rampant in the horse slaughter industry.

Sargon started life as a well-bred Kentucky race horse. During his career, he was administered many drugs illegal in animals to be slaughtered for human consumption.

Once retired, Sargon changed hands a few times before ending up with Kim Wilson, who adored him as a companion and therapy animal for people suffering emotional or physical hardship. Kim also taught Sargon many tricks, including to “Pray for horses around the world.”

Ironically, Sargon ended up being stolen and brutally slaughtered himself, after Kim loaned him to someone masquerading as a rescue.

Sargon was supposedly going to help a man suffering from cancer, but shortly after leaving Kim’s property he vanished and the women who were “fostering” him cut off all contact with Kim.

An RCMP investigation discovered that Sargon had been sold to Ontario kill buyer, Jeff Grof, with forged ownership and drug history paperwork. Grof then shipped Sargon to the Richelieu Meats plant in Quebec, where he was slaughtered for human consumption.

Kim’s life has been destroyed by this event. She’s currently fighting legally for justice for Sargon, that he may not have died in vain.

“I’m devastated at the loss of my beautiful, gentle friend, and how this could happen in Canada. I thought I had protected Sargon. It turned out it was all deception.”

~Kim Wilson

As long as slaughter exists in Canada, no horse is safe.

STOLEN HORSES SOLD FOR SLAUGHTER

Family Pets Killed For Food ~ April 2018

Kathy O’Reilly was horrified to discover her missing horses and long-time family pets had been stolen and sold to slaughter at Bouvry Exports meat packing plant in Fort MacLeod, Alberta. Stolen horses can be sold to the plant with no proof of ownership, and slaughtered the same day, in some cases before an owner realizes they’re gone.

RCMP have charged Wayne Jubb with theft of cattle, trafficking of stolen property and uttering forged documents. Jubbs has failed to appear for his last 8 court dates.

Kathy has started a petition to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to implement protocols to prevent unlawful slaughter.

June 2016

A worker at a Montreal butcher shop was instructed to add horse meat to burgers labelled as 100% beef.

“I often helped chop up meat to make burgers and to also make sausages," the employee said. "They asked me each time to add horse and sometimes pork."

LANDMARK LAWSUIT AGAINST CANADIAN FOOD INSPECTION AGENCY

CFIA Sued For Overcrowding of Horses ~ Sept 2018

The Canadian Horse Defence Coalition (CHDC) has filed a lawsuit against the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) for violating the Health of Animals Regulations and neglecting to enforce the Health of Animals Act.

The CHDC cites photographic and video evidence which has consistently revealed large draft horses crammed together for export purposes, and evidence of horses dying and injuring themselves.

“This legal challenge certainly pits David against Goliath. But the CFIA is not above the law.  The government has certain legal and ethical obligations, which cannot be swept under the rug.”

~ Sinikka Crosland

Executive Director of the Canadian Horse Defence Coalition

This is the first time in history the CFIA has been sued in attempt to make them enforce their own federal regulations.

FORT EDMONTON HORSES DESTINED FOR SLAUGHTER

January 2019

On January 26, 2019, two former carriage horses in poor condition, belonging to the City of Edmonton, were taken to the auction in Tofield, Alberta. A private buyer outbid the meat man and took the horses home.

Within 24 hours, one of the horses died. The other was admitted to a clinic for lifesaving veterinary treatment. It’s unclear what caused the horses’ health issues, but the city has been criticized for their method of disposing of these animals at a high kill sale, with no regard for their future.

Hopefully this story will result in the city taking more responsible action to rehome any future animals in their care.
